Eco-Friendly Crocheted Tote Bag
Materials
10-15 plastic produce bags
Thick cotton cord, 5 meters
Crochet hook, size 6mm
Scissors
Measuring tape
Directions
Gather and clean the plastic produce bags, cutting them into strips about 1 inch wide to create 'plarn' (plastic yarn).
Using the crochet hook, begin with a slip knot and crochet a chain that measures approximately 30 cm when relaxed.
Turn and single crochet into each chain, continuing to work in rows until you have a rectangular base measuring 30 cm by 10 cm.
Next, crochet in a round, adding single crochet stitches around the edges of the base to start forming the body of the bag.
Continue crocheting in a spiral, adding rows until the body of the bag reaches your desired height, approximately 35 cm.
Cut 3 pieces of thick cotton cord, each 1.5 meters long. Braid these together tightly to form the handle.
Attach the braided handle securely to the top of the bag using the crochet hook and plarn, ensuring it's evenly distributed for balance.
Finish off the bag by weaving in any loose ends and trimming excess plarn.
Variations & Tips
For a more colorful tote, use plastic bags in various colors or dye the cotton cord before braiding. If you prefer a softer texture, try using thinner plastic bags for a more delicate look. You can also experiment with different crochet stitches, such as the half double or double crochet, to add texture and dimension to the bag. Adding embellishments like tassels or beads can personalize the tote further.
