Transform your old window screens into a functional and space-saving drying rack with just a few additional materials. This project not only repurposes items you may already have at home but also provides a convenient solution for air-drying delicate garments or herbs. It's a sustainable and creative way to declutter while adding a unique piece to your home.
The finished window screen drying rack can be styled in a minimalist laundry room or a rustic kitchen. To enhance its charm, place it near a window where natural light can highlight its functional beauty. Coordinate with neutral or earth-toned decor to complement the metal and wire elements. A soft beige or pastel backdrop will create a calming aesthetic.
Window Screen Drying Rack

Materials
5 old window screens (approximately 24x36 inches each)
12 feet of garden wire (sturdy, 16-gauge)
Wire cutters
Pliers
Metal hooks (10, small size)
Sandpaper (medium grit)
Spray paint (optional, in desired color)
Directions
Begin by sanding the edges of each window screen to remove any sharp or rusted areas, ensuring a smooth finish.
If desired, spray paint the window screens in a uniform color to match your decor. Allow them to dry completely.
Lay the screens flat on a large surface. Arrange them in a stack, aligning the edges evenly.
Using the garden wire, cut 8 pieces, each 1.5 feet long. These will be used to create support structures between each screen layer.
With pliers, attach the wire pieces to the corners of the bottom screen, bending them into a U-shape to create legs, ensuring stability.
Stack the next screen on top, and use the metal hooks to secure it to the wire legs. Repeat this step for the remaining screens, creating a tiered effect.
Once all screens are stacked and secured, adjust the wire supports to ensure even spacing and stability.
Place the drying rack in its desired location, ensuring it's balanced and sturdy.

Variations & Tips
To adapt this project for different needs, consider using larger screens for increased drying space or adding wheels to the base for mobility. You could also incorporate decorative elements like hooks for hanging additional items or use colorful wire for a playful touch. These variations enhance functionality without altering the core design of the drying rack.
