Wooden crate lid (approx. 18x12 inches)
Foam padding (1 inch thick, cut to lid size)
Outdoor fabric (20x14 inches, water-resistant)
2 sturdy hinges (2 inches)
1 wooden frame (20x14 inches, 2 inches thick)
Wood screws (1 inch)
Electric drill with screwdriver bit
Staple gun with staples
Wood stain or outdoor paint (optional)
Directions
Attach the foam padding to the top side of the wooden crate lid using the staple gun, ensuring the foam is securely fastened.
Cover the foam with outdoor fabric, pulling it tightly over the edges of the lid. Staple the fabric on the underside of the lid, ensuring no wrinkles or loose ends.
Align the padded lid with the wooden frame. Ensure that the lid is centered to allow for even weight distribution when used.
Secure the lid to the frame using the hinges. Attach one end of each hinge to the edge of the lid and the other to the frame, allowing the lid to open and close smoothly.
Optional: Apply wood stain or paint to the wooden frame for added protection against the elements and to match your outdoor decor.
Test the bench by kneeling on it to ensure stability and comfort. Make any necessary adjustments to the hinges or padding.
Variations & Tips
For a personalized touch, consider using patterned or brightly colored outdoor fabric to cover the padding. For enhanced durability, select treated wood or apply a weatherproof sealant to the frame. If desired, add a handle to one side of the frame for easier transport. Alternatively, use reclaimed wood for a sustainable option, which can add unique character to the piece. Adjust the dimensions to better fit your space or personal comfort preferences.
