Transform your discarded plastic grocery bags into a heavy-duty waterproof garage mat using just two additional household items. This DIY project not only helps reduce waste by recycling plastic but also provides a practical and durable solution for protecting your garage floor. The end result is a robust mat that withstands wear and tear, perfect for catching dirt, oil spills, and moisture.
Place the mat in a prominent area of your garage, ideally near the entrance or under a workbench. Coordinate with neutral tones or metallic elements to complement industrial or modern garage aesthetics. The mat's subtle sheen and texture blend well with concrete or tiled floors, enhancing the overall organized and clean look of your space.
Heavy-Duty Fused Plastic Garage Mat
Materials
20-25 wrinkled plastic grocery bags
2 large sheets of parchment paper
Household iron
Scissors
Measuring tape
Directions
Lay a large sheet of parchment paper on a flat, heat-resistant surface.
Smooth out the plastic grocery bags, cutting off handles and bottoms to create flat sheets.
Layer the plastic sheets on top of the parchment paper, overlapping slightly.
Cover the plastic layers with the second sheet of parchment paper.
Set the iron to medium heat (no steam) and gently iron over the parchment paper, fusing the plastic layers together. Move the iron in slow, circular motions to ensure even melting.
Allow the fused plastic to cool, then remove the top parchment paper.
Trim the edges of the fused plastic to create a rectangular mat shape using scissors.
Repeat the layering and fusing process if a thicker mat is desired, stacking multiple fused layers.
Variations & Tips
For a larger mat, increase the number of plastic bags and repeat the fusing process to add additional layers for extra thickness and durability. Alternatively, incorporate colored plastic bags or those with unique logos to create a custom design that adds a pop of color and personal touch to the garage space.
