There’s a certain satisfaction in turning a few humble household things into something truly useful, and this little project does exactly that. These DIY anti-vibration washer pads are made from chopped pink erasers and two pantry liquids, then shaped into simple cushion pads that can help soften the rattling and walking that so many washing machines are prone to. It’s the kind of thrifty fix I appreciate more and more these days, especially when a noisy laundry room starts to wear on your nerves.
I’m always fond of practical homemade solutions that feel a bit old-fashioned in spirit, even when the method is unusual. If you like tinkering, saving money, and making use of basic supplies you may already have on hand, this project is well worth an afternoon. It’s best for folks who don’t mind a little experimenting and want a small, grippy pad to place under washer feet on a level floor.
Materials
Instructions
1. Chop the pink erasers into small, even pieces about 1/4 inch wide so they soften more evenly when heated.
2. Lightly grease your silicone mold or parchment-lined tray with the teaspoon of oil to keep the mixture from sticking as it cools.
3. Add the chopped erasers, white vinegar, and cornstarch to the saucepan and stir well before turning on the heat.
4. Set the pan over low heat and stir constantly for 8 to 12 minutes, until the eraser pieces soften and the mixture becomes thick, sticky, and moldable.
5. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for 2 to 3 minutes, just until it is safe to handle with gloves but still warm and pliable.
6. Scoop the warm mixture onto the prepared tray or into the molds, then press it firmly into four equal pads about 3 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick.
7. Smooth the tops with the back of a spoon or your gloved fingers so each pad sits as flat and even as possible.
8. Let the pads dry and firm up at room temperature for 24 hours, then turn them out of the mold or peel them off the parchment.
9. Trim the edges with a craft knife so the pads are even, and check that all four are close to the same thickness for balanced support.
10. Lift each washer foot carefully and place one finished pad underneath each foot on a clean, dry, level floor.
Variations & Tips
For a thicker pad: Make the pads closer to 3/4 inch thick if your washer has a stronger shake, but keep all four the same height so the machine stays level.
For square pads: Press the mixture into a small parchment-lined container and cut it into four equal squares after drying if that shape fits your washer feet better.
For better grip: Clean the floor well before setting the pads in place, because dust and detergent residue can make any anti-vibration pad slide more than it should.
For safer use: These work best as light-duty homemade pads on a stable, level machine; if your washer rocks badly, walks across the floor, or seems unbalanced, level the appliance first and inspect it for mechanical issues.
My practical advice: I’ve learned over the years that laundry-room fixes are often half material and half patience. Let these cure fully before testing them, because a pad that still feels soft in the center won’t hold up nearly as well once the spin cycle begins.
